Donald was, like his two brothers,  a boarder, but he was only at the School for a year.  A couple of years after his death, it was said that, "... many will remember him as a chubby and most lovable little boy."
He was married to Joan Platt of Knutsford in January 1943.
Donald joined the Paratroops in  1940.  He was commisioned at Sandhurst in 1942 when he won the Belt of Honour and was presented to the King on an official visit.
During his service, Donald took part in landings at Tunisia, Sicily and fought in the Battle of Cassino in Italy.
He was serving in Greece when he was killed, after jumping in bad weather, leading his platoon.
Donald is buried in the Phaleron War Cemetery in Greece, which lies a few kilometres to the South-East of Athens.  It is the last resting place of of those who were temporarily interred in battlefield graves, military and civil cemeteries in the whole of mainland Greece.
